Rodnei Mountains National Park is the vastest protected area in the North of the Oriental Carpathians, having a surface of 46.399 ha, from which 3.300 hectares were declared reservation of the biosphere in 1979. The importance of this protected area is due to the geology and the geomorphology but also to the presence of various species of fauna and flora.
Most of the localities situated in the neighbourhood of the park are documentarily attested in the centuries XIII-XV: Rodna, Moisei, Năsăud, Rebra, etc., zones which preserve traditions, old habits and elements of traditional architecture. The folklore and the popular costume have a special beauty. In the limitrophe zones of the park they still use the moving of the flocks, which confirms the pastoral origin of the Romanian people. In the Southern part of the park there are the mineral springs having therapeutic properties (Sângeorz-Băi resort).
The relief of the Park is remarked by the richness of forms: lakes (67), valleys, glacial basins. A special karst form is the cave Blue Spring of Iza (2,5 km) with spectacular galleries and cascades. The high central part of Rodna mountain mass offers varied landscapes, of a real interest, especially the complexes: Ineu (2279 m), Omu – Gărgălău (2134 m, 2159 m), Galat - Puzdrele (2048 m, 2189 m), Pietrosul Rodnei (2303 m), Bătrâna (1710 m).
The most important areas on the range of the park are the scientific reservations. I am talking firstly of the Reservation Pietrosu Mare, then the Reservation Piatra Rea, both of them situated in the Northern zone of the park.
